How do I know I'm saved?

As Christians we need to know that we are part of God’s family, that He accepts us, and that we will go to heaven when we leave this earth. That is our right as children of God. Knowing God’s love for us, that He has offered eternal life to anyone who believes in Him, and that eternal life can’t be lost, we should never have any doubt.

But let’s face it, we sin and when we do it is easy to get down on ourselves, and, if we’re not careful, to begin to doubt. Before we go any further, let me assure you that eternal life comes to sinners through faith apart from works, and that works and sin have no bearing on your eternal destiny. Sin has its consequences. But, for the Believer, hell is not one of them.

Throughout the Church’s history, there have been large groups of people who have struggled with their assurance of eternal life. This is because they have forgotten that their salvation is by grace alone, not only from the start, but all the way until the finish. If you look to yourself for your assurance, you will find nothing but despair. This happens because when we look at ourselves our eyes are off of Jesus, and when our eyes are off of Jesus, we fall into sin. And if we are looking to ourselves, sin will make us doubt. This is the struggle of so many Children of God who have lost sight of His love.

Assurance comes, not from looking at ourselves, but from taking God at His word. The Bible says, “Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31). Doubting ourselves is easy and even makes sense, but how can we doubt God? Has He ever lied to us?

If you want to know if you’re going to heaven, all you need to do is ask yourself one question—have I believed in Jesus for eternal life? If you answered yes, then there is no need to worry. You are secure as His child.
